I’m so excited and honored to be joining the 2014-2015 FGI-AZ Board as regional director.
Recently, when boasting about how much I treasure my FGI membership, I was asked how long I’ve been a member but couldn’t exactly recall. I guessed it had been about 10 years. Shortly after, I was working in my office and glanced over at the pile of FGI directories I had collected through the years only to discover that they dated back to the year 2000! Fourteen years had flown by, yet the cherished friendships I’ve made and exciting events I’ve attended had made it seem so much shorter. Even though I’ve had the pleasure of knowing so many of you as friends, I want to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about me professionally and introduce myself to new members.
I started my career nearly two decades ago working in design and production in L.A. for X-Large, a line owned by Mike Diamond of the Beastie Boys; and X-Girl, a line owned by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. Later, I partnered with actress Christie Clark, who played Carrie Brady on the soap opera “Days of Lives,” to create a board sports inspired street wear line called Monkeywench with celebrity clients including Christina Applegate, Quentin Tarantino, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tori Spelling, and Leann Rimes, among others. Currently, I design a collection of eco-friendly dresses and other garments from upcycled T-shirts at www.angelajohnsondesigns.com, I’m a fashion design teacher at Mesa Community College and Collins College and the founder of LabelHorde: The “Hautest” Fashion Directory. I was honored to have been selected the FGI-AZ Rising Star in 2004. You can learn more about me here.
Although I’ve been on the FGI-AZ Board of Directors in the past, I’m really looking forward to the enlightening challenges that being regional director is going to bring to my life. In return I hope my industry experience will convey a fresh and unique interpretation of the FGI vision to our Arizona group. One of the first challenges I’m facing is putting together a new board of directors. With so many seasoned board members rolling off after having fulfilled their allotted time on the board, we have a lot of big stilettos to fill. The new board is filled with amazingly talented professionals, but it’s one of our smallest boards to date. In order for our amazing organization to continue being the respected authority of all things fashion in Arizona and to enable it to exceed it’s potential in the future, we need your help. I’d like to extend an invitation to take full advantage of your membership by joining us on the board or on a committee. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you are interested. If you’ve ever had great ideas for events or ways to make the organization even better, now is the time to join in and help make it happen. I’d also like to encourage you to submit news, events and special member offers to include in our Newsletter.
I’m looking forward to seeing you all on January 23rd at our Members Only Annual Meeting at Fresh Start. There’s no fee to attend and you’ll meet the new board of directors, learn about ways to refresh your life in 2014 and hear about our organization’s plans for the year. Look for your email invitation soon. Be sure to renew your membership (through the renewal email sent by New York headquarters) or join our organization before this members-only meeting. Everyone who renews before the meeting will be entered into a drawing to potentially win a free FGI membership for 2015!
I can’t wait to see you all on January 23rd and I’m really looking forward to making 2014 a great year for FGI-AZ!
